Mitch took a liking to the physical and analytical sides of chemistry as an undergrad at Cleveland State University and stayed with it at Northwestern, where he did his PhD work in surface chemistry & physics, graduating in 1993. He then ran an analytical lab for a small Chicago-area environmental company that specialized in analyzing and managing ridiculously hazardous materials. Since 1997, Mitch has been reporting for C&EN from the relative safety of his Chicago office.
